The following links access information and resources on teaching children and students to read. Right Track Reading encourages parents and teachers to explore these sites and to research additional information on teaching children to read, the science of proficient reading, the valid evidence based research and the proven effectiveness of direct systematic phonics.

Report of the National Reading Panel “Teaching Children to Read” - This summary report outlines the findings of the panel’s evidence based assessment of the scientific research literature on reading. This panel adopted rigorous research methodological standards in screening the research literature. Big Ideas in Beginning Reading - University of Oregon - This excellent site contains information on effectively teaching all children to read. The Big Ideas goal is “All children reading by the end of 3rd grade”. This website includes reliance on validated research. In addition to general information, this website also contains detailed information that would be helpful for teachers.  http://reading.uoregon.edu/


The National Right to Read Foundation - This organization’s mission is to return comprehensive, scientifically-based reading instruction and good literature to every elementary school in America. This site provides many informative articles and links. www.nrrf.org


The Partnership for Reading: Bringing Scientific Evidence to Learning - This government website is a collaborative effort by three federal agencies - the National Institute for Literacy, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the US Department of Education. The purpose of the Partnership for Reading is to bring the findings of evidence-based reading research to the educational community, families, and others with an interest in helping all people learn to read well. A few of the informative web page articles that summarize the research findings are listed below: (Note 2013 update- these articles are no longer found under NIFL but are located in the new Department of Education LINCS system- Literacy Information and Communication System)


Put Reading First: The Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read - This 56 page publication from the Partnership for Reading written for teachers summarizes findings of the NRP, suggests practical application and answers questions.  (Right Track Reading recommends this teacher version for parents, as the publication designed for parents does not contain sufficient detail.)


The National Library of Medicine - National Institue of Health NCBI - The government web based literature retrieval/search systems PubMed and PubMed Central provide access to and information on numerous research articles and journal citations. Although the amount of information on this site can be overwhelming and at times technical, informative abstracts/articles include:  


Georgetown University Medical Center  - This site has several informative articles related to teaching children to read. These informative articles include:


The Center for Development- The CDL is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing school success for all children. CDL specializes in the development and dissemination of research, knowledge, and best practices related to educational success. This informative site contains resources helpful for parents, teachers and others involved in educating children. A few of the many informative articles located in their library include:  


Illinois Loop.org  - This site contains informative articles and links to educational issues. Although the site was developed to discuss educational issues in the state of Illinois, it applies just as well to other states. Their pages on reading are found at www.illinoisloop.org/reading.html 


Society for Quality Education - The SQE is a Canadian non-profit organization whose mission is to provide facts arising from research about quality education. While focused on education in Canada, their information for parents on reading instruction is also applicable to the United States. www.societyforqualityeducation.org/


National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Reading Report Card -  Use this site to find out the percentage of children proficient in reading in your state. Note: Look at actual % of students within each achievement level, not the comparisons to average to determine actual success in teaching children to read.   http://www.nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/reading/


National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL):  This government site estimates the adult literacy rates in America. Look at the number of adults in each prose literacy level. (Note this information was previouly located in the NIFL website)  http://nces.ed.gov/naal/index.asp
