The Tools to Achieve Reading Success

Effective ~ Affordable ~ Easy-to-Use

The focus of the spelling instruction in Right Track Reading Lessons is to help the child acquire the ability to accurately represent our written language.  The program helps children achieve spelling success children by establishing a foundation of phonologic processing of print and systematically building skills. Right Track Reading Lessons helps children develop spelling skills by linking spelling to a strong direct systematic phonics program and directly building phonologic processing. Please read Effective Reading Instruction: Teaching Children How to Spell for information on how to help your child or student build a foundation for spelling success.

The spelling lists provided below are designed to use with Right Track Reading Lessons Direct Systematic Phonics Program. These decodable spelling lists are sequenced to match the phonemic code the child has explicitly learned as part of the Right Track Reading Lessons. The student learns to spell by ‘writing the sounds’ for these decodable words. Through practice recoding simple decodable words the student develops a foundation for spelling and also strengthens phonologic processing pathways necessary for proficient reading.  See using decodable spelling words lists under recommendations for effective spelling instruction.

The spelling lists are given for the Right Track Reading lesson number. All spelling words listed are decodable based on the sound knowledge to that point (the sounds are listed for reference). Bonus words (indicated by the asterisk symbol *) include words with blended consonants and also the irregular words that have been specifically introduced and taught to the child within the reading program. Short decodable sentences are added to the spelling list, so the student can also practice writing/spelling within short sentences. Remember in early instruction it is important to directly instruct the child to use a capital letter and period so they practice these essential components of correct written language from the beginning.

Use these spelling lists at the listed reading lesson # or from an earlier reading lesson. While you can use spelling words from an earlier reading lesson don’t select words from a more advanced lesson containing phonemic code the child has not yet learned. Complete directions for ‘writing words/spelling’ is included in the program directions.
